Size and Layout

Learn how to determine the perfect size and layout for your sauna space.

Size and Layout

Determining the right size for your sauna is crucial for comfort, efficiency, and functionality. The size you choose will impact everything from heating requirements to the overall experience.

Sizing Factors

  • Number of users and capacity needs
  • Available space in your yard, garage, bathroom, or other location
  • Heater capacity requirements
  • Bench layout and seating arrangements
  • Door and access requirements

Size and Capacity

  • Small: 1-2 person saunas (4' x 4' to 4' x 6')
  • Medium: 3-4 person saunas (6' x 6' to 6' x 8')
  • Large: 4-6 person saunas (8' x 8')
  • Extra Largee: 6+ person saunas (8' x 8' and larger)

Ceilings & Height

  • Standard ceiling height is 7' (2.1m), but can range from 6.5' to 8' depending on your preference and space constraints.
  • Higher ceilings allow for better heat layering, while lower ceilings heat up faster.

Volume Calculation

  • Calculate cubic feet: Length × Width × Height. This helps determine heater size requirements.
  • Most heaters are rated for specific cubic foot ranges, so accurate volume calculation is essential for proper heating.

Benches & Layout

Proper bench layout is crucial for comfort, safety, and efficient use of space. The arrangement of benches determines how many people can comfortably use the sauna and affects heat distribution throughout the space.

  • Lower Bench: 18-24 inches from floor - cooler zone, good for warming up or cooling down
  • Upper Bench: 36-42 inches from floor - hottest zone, traditional sauna experience
  • Step Bench: Optional middle bench at 28-32 inches for gradual temperature transition

Bench Width and Depth

  • Minimum width per person: 24 inches (2 feet)
  • Comfortable width per person: 30 inches
  • Bench depth: 18-24 inches for comfortable seating
  • Allow 6-8 inches clearance from walls for air circulation

Common Layout Configurations

  • L-Shaped: Upper bench along one wall, lower bench along adjacent wall - maximizes space efficiency
  • U-Shaped: Upper bench wraps around three walls - best for larger saunas (8' x 8'+)
  • Straight Bench: Single upper bench along longest wall - simplest design, good for narrow spaces
  • Tiered: Multiple levels on same wall - traditional Finnish style, excellent heat layering

Heat Distribution Considerations

  • Place upper bench 18-24 inches below ceiling for optimal heat
  • Ensure 6-8 feet clearance between heater and benches for safety
  • Design layout so heater heat can circulate around all seating areas
  • Avoid blocking ventilation with bench placement

Accessibility Considerations

  • Include lower bench for easier access and temperature options
  • Ensure clear path from door to benches (minimum 24 inches)
  • Consider grab bars for safety, especially near upper benches
  • Plan for adequate headroom - minimum 6.5 feet at highest bench level
